In July 2011 lead from the roofs was stolen from Blackpool’s model village.
In August 2011 Peter Blake’s public sculpture ‘Life as a Circus’ was also stolen from Blackpool’s promenade.
Less than a month later Blackpool council announces that the sculpture is to be replaced with a replica.
Pushing this series of real world events to a (sort of) logical conclusion The Stolen City project began life as a short story about Blackpool being stolen written by the fictional author Barry Stafford. In collaboration with Aunty Social – a community craft group based in Blackpool – Barry held a series of book readings and workshops designed to provoke conversations around the rebuilding of Blackpool. All the objects made during the workshops were then placed together to create a public memorial to Blackpool.
